The Suburban Villanelle

tangoSomething a little different – an exercise in fixed verse for the good of my shaky grey cells.  Writing a villanelle feels a bit like verbal sudoku…

The Suburban Villanelle

Steps you must follow to rules she will tell,
No clumsy clog foot rustic swaggering,
Will amuse the suburban villanelle.

Free form proposals – annoyed demoiselle:
She wants attentive suitors pursuing,
Steps they must follow to rules she will tell.

Measured verses thrill and please her well,
But trendy quick unstructured gesturing,
Irritates the suburban villanelle.

Firm rhyming pulses bind the tango spell,
Words and lines of tight poetic dancing,
Steps you must follow to rules she will tell.

Whisper subtle tales of how deep you fell,
But rein in all flowery lyric posing,
When you chase the suburban villanelle.

Verbal conceits all spent, words shot to hell,
Retire hurt and seek another’s nursing.
Steps you must follow to rules she will tell,
When you serve the suburban villanelle.
